6 Months off work.... what to do.

So, as some people may know, my second son was born September 26, 2011.  Thanks to the wonderful country I live in, and my awesome job I can take up to 6 months paternity leave @ 100% pay.  Since my wife is a stay at home mom, she doesn't get any maternity leave, so plain and simple I took the spring/summer off.

Now, the big problem is, what should I do with this time. Here are my goals in the order I need to do them:

1. NESDev competition organized
2. Develop a fricken NES game

I also have a bunch of other stuff I'm also working on.  I'm working on the art for Kevins Leisure Suit Larry port.  And I'm still beta testing for a couple of other projects.  However, all of this stuff takes a backseat to my family.  At the end of the day, they are what is important to me, and I don't want to waste my six months off and not spend any time with them.

Moving on. I still owe MRN a demo cartridge that I haven't worked on in a while.  However, I have been inspired recently by Rob Bryant aka ROTH.  If you haven't checked out the dogcast @ then you are missing out.  He is making a podcast 5 days a week showing his progress.  It seems to be working.  It has been 2 weeks and he is almost completely finished a game. This might be a strategy I'll have to try. We'll see, a 2.5 year old and a 5 month old keep me pretty busy! (I don't know how Roth does it, he has a baby as well).

Well, that's enough for now, back to the Jack & Coke.

BAN Insert & Random crap

As you have probably seen by now, everyone's favorite ginger is releasing a new game sometime soon (pending bug reports etc etc) and I was asked if I wanted to make an insert to go in the box for this release. I of course said sure, but didn't have a ton of content to post up yet. What you see below is actual screenshots from the emulator photoshopped into something slightly resembling an advertisement. As an added bonus, people who buy the cart (if they are smart enough) will be eligible for a random drawing of a 1-off promo cart.

On the downside, somewhere between having a newborn baby, going to school, and working, I have to find time to finish above said promo cart. On the plus side, the class I'm taking this semester is logic design/assembly programming so it'll keep me in the mood for programming.

COMPO CART... there was some talk about trying to get as many games as possible on the cartridge, but that doesn't seem like it is going to happen. The NROM version is pretty much finished. This may end up being a retrozone release if I don't hear anything about this soon. The more people bug me, the faster this will happen

NESDev Competition Officially Closed!

That's right, both categories are now closed.  We had two more entries in the free-for-all category.  I'll be posting them and updating the website soon!

Slow Goin...

I've been able to work on my game a bit, but not nearly as much as I would like. The family has been sick, and I've just been too busy to dedicate serious time to the project. I've got a month to pull it off, and I think it IS possible. Now that Roth has released his game, it is encouraging me to jump back on the horse and get some results!

It's time for me to quit being a lazy bastard and do some work

Instructables Update

I'm officially a finalist. ¬†One of 22 entries selected from over 200! I'm pretty stoked, maybe I'll win one of the 9 prizes

Edit: A loser is me...
