In case you hadn't heard, it's been a big year for fans of the Virtual Boy. To start, back in June over on PlanetVB, one of their user's mellot124 picked up the two-player cable project, finished it, and started taking orders. Two-player Hyper Fighting will now be entering new homes and not just be for free play at the Let's Play Gaming Expo. Although, we did buy two sets so we can do two two-player setups at LPGE 2018. Maybe we'll be doing Tennis by then?

Next up, two new Virtual Boty titles were released over at Uncle Tusk's site. First was Insecticide, which we can gloss over since it's small batch of 25 already sold out. Available right now though is Virtual Fishing, which we heard was heavy on text and took a long time to translate. Thanks for the great additions, Tusker!

Last is a slightly more ambitious project from two Planet VB members and homebrew developers, KR155E and Jorgeche. They just launched a patreon to help support their work. Here's what they had to say about the campaign:

We have been creating Virtual Boy demos and games for the past 15 years. My debut game, Blox, has also been physically released on cartridge. Besides the games, we have also been building development tools, like VBDE, a complete and easy to use IDE, and VUEngine, a versatile game engine. Everything is open source and moderately licensed under MIT so that everybody can freely use our work. VUEngine has been in development for 12 years and has lately reached a very mature state.

We now want to, besides further improving the engine, make full games with it, the best we possibly can. Up until now, we have done all this in the evenings, besides our full time jobs. We aim to take our endevours to the next level through this campaign - the ultimate goal is nothing less than to become full-time independent game developers and release regular new, high quality Virtual Boy games plus even better tools for people to create their own games.

We've reached our first milestone through the $250 funding goal, which allows Jorge to work one full day per week on the engine and our game(s). You could say that the campaign already achieved to make Jorge a professional part-time Virtual Boy homebrew developer. :-)
