Oh wow... It is sad to hear that one one of the greatest minds of our time passed away. May he rest in peace.

Remember in the Fellowship of the Ring when Aragorn threw that piece of fruit and hit him in the head after asking for second breakfast?  Yeah, that's an apple.

My Trekkie wife loves that scene in the sixth season Star Trek The Next Generation episode "Descent" where Data (who is an android and Second Officer/third in command) is playing poker in the Holodeck with Issac Newton, Albert Einstein, and Stephen Hawking (as himself)...as if to imply even back then Hawking would be considered on the same level as Newton/Einstein. Can you imagine what that must've been like for Hawking?

ALS is probably the worst thing you can get diagnosed with, what he was able to accomplish after the diagnosis was pretty amazing.

I was fortunate enough to be able to hear him give a talk a few years ago at my institute. It was a wonderful experience, he had a vibrant sense of humor!

I did, too, about fifteen years ago. Pretty glad I did.

A sad loss of a truly brilliant physicist. After being diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease he was given just 2 years to live in 1963, not only did he make a mockery of that prognosis his contributions in Astrophysics have expanded our knowledge about our universe in the most astounding ways.
