Found this old thread on black box variants, which was helpful:

But I am wondering if the three that have never been found to have a round sticker seal (Volleyball, Pro Wrestling and Slalom) exist w/o NES-GP and/or the code at top left?  I have never seen any of these 3 w/o the code and NES-GP.

Mmmm I'd say these don't exist without NES-GP because they're part of the last generation of Black Box games released in March 1987.

I've never seen any without the country code either.

I still (since the last thread you linked) have 5 variants for Pro Wrestling, 5 for Slalom, and 3 for Volleyball. All of them have the back code in top upper left. If anyone finds a box without that I'd definetly love to hear about it.

Hey Braveheart, does it mean you have a Soccer box with no back code?

I have a Soccer with no country code, but it has the NES-Gp. BH, would it be possible to get a list of what variants exist for the black box games ? (as well as the silver ones like Kid Icarus).

Man, there must be boxes of Pro Wrestling, Slalom and Volleyball that are just like the first two Soccer on your cheesy geeky list. All these games have been released at the same time.

surprisingly, i think i only have 1 variant of soccer. i havent received a black box in a while, but every time i do, i check to see if there are any variances. i think i have about 100 extra black box cibs boxed up in my hallway at my parents house. the only stuff i have with me at my apartment are about 200 extra cibs of random shit that i intended to sell a few months ago... however, it just sits in my living room cuz im too lazy! my cpa studying is done for the night! peace out kiddos!

Is there a master list of all variants somewhere? I never noticed the 'TM' thing on the carts.

There's a lot of evidence that the "official" Nintendo lists are wrong on this count, and that Soccer was actually one of the original 1985 titles.  The box/label variants bear that out, as does info from the chips themselves inside the games, contemporaneous news sources from 1985, and the record in the US copyright database.  The other three games were definitely from 1Q 1987 though.

Interestingly, the one black box game that I haven't been able to get a good fix on the release date for is Super Mario Bros.  There's a pretty big debate over on the Wikipedia talk page suggesting that it wasn't released until sometime in 1986.  I've never actually seen one from 1985 myself.  If Erik has a timeline worked out for label and box variations, I suppose that would be some evidence one way or the other, as would someone finding a game with chips from 1985 inside of it.

Wow, that was faster than expected.  Thanks for that.

Yeah, the 49th week of '85 which is firmly in December, so too late for "launch", but in time for the holidays.  If anyone else cares to look, do we have one earlier than that?

I looked at a few more for you and found one that's a little earlier.

Well, that seems pretty conclusive.  42nd week of '85 is about as early as I've seen for any of the black box games, so it looks like SMB was definitely go for launch.

42nd week of 1985: that puts it at between...

8501 = 12/31/1984 to 1/6/1985
8514 = 4/1/1985 to 4/7/1985
8527 = 7/1/1985 to 7/7/1985
8540 = 9/30/1985 to 10/6/1985
8541 = 10/7/1985 to 10/13/1985
8542 = 10/14/1985 to 10/20/1985

... Oct. 14-20, 1985. Could seem like a launch title, then, but was, of course, a separate game. Earliest street date I could then think is November 1985.
