EDIT 05/08/2017: Updating this post with a link to my active Solstice collection link and buy list. Figured this was a better approach than making a ton of posts with updates.

Justin's Solstice Collection & "Searching For" Buy List:
http://staffofdemnos.com/list/

I am in the process of putting together a museum-quality shadowbox display for the NES game Solstice. All items in the collection are being preserved in UV-resistant cases or frames.

Pretty much anything I don’t have I’m interested in gathering up for this collection. Later this summer once I have the collection display built, I’ll also be putting up a website to function as a virtual museum for Solstice which will include all the information I’ve been able to gather and high-resolution images and video documenting all the items added to the collection.

Thanks for your time!

I'm 99% sure that was me who bought it from him.
Oh, would love to track down an original copy of that newsletter with the offer! Thats definitely the sort of original documents related to the game I'm hoping to track down.

Ha! That's an awesome spread. Thanks so much for sharing that. I haven't seen it before. The L.A. Guns cameo definitely sets the tone for the era, I think!
Another rare Solstice-related item to put on my wishlist.

I did, thanks! What an amazing Kickstarter it was. I'm glad it fully funded this time around. In fact, it was his kickstarter that prompted me to seriously pursue putting this Solstice display together for historical preservation and to be more than just a personal collection. I jumped in the Kickstarter at the limited level to get the signed print and unfolded artist's proof box. I also got a chance to chat with him via messages about the original paintings, and it turns out he sold them to a private collection back in 2012. Oh, I wish I had started this project five years back; I would --without any hesitation-- have bought the original peices of art from him.

Agreed all around, a very neat guy and easy to chat with. That poster art is just great too. I need to find that one of these days...

I took photographs of the Solstice Player's Pak that includes "The Making of Solstice" video tape. There wasn't a lot of information available out there on the web about this when I was searching for a copy to add to my Solstice collection. Since this thread is now showing up on a Google search for the topic, I'm posting those pics here for the reference of anyone else who might be searching for information on the contents.

^ Photograph of complete Solstice: Quest for the Staff of Demnos Player's Pak which includes: (1) Video8 (8MM) tape of "The Making of Solstice" [with case and insert], (3) double-sided Player Score Cards, (2) Solstice Cover Art Stickers, (1) Solstice Cover Art Card, (2) Solstice "Final Room" Stickers, (2) Solstice "Final Room" cards. I find it interesting that the image of the room was inverted on these. I wonder if the room was originally inverted, and then changed later to fit a specific location on the final game map?

^ Photograph of front (top) and back (bottom) of insert from the video tape case.

Thanks! If there is a more logical place for me to have posted these, just let me know. I just wanted to make sure they are easy to find for anyone who might be looking for more information.

Just a quick update. I have managed to track down the current owner of the specific Solstice demo cartridge pictured on the NA Solstice database gallery. They are not currently interested in parting with it, however at least I know where it's at now and in a safe collection. I am still interested in any other Solstice demo/prototypes, and of course, any additional items (as per my previous message above). Thanks again! Everyone's been a great help here. I truly appreciate it.

Hey dude, this is a really interesting mission you are on! I only recently played Solstice for the first time, and it is a cool game, I love the art and especially the music! It is definitely quite tricky though, so I'm gonna have to spend a bit more time with it to get used to the isometric viewpoint.

Anyway, sorry I can't help you with any more info or anything, but I was wondering if you wouldn't mind sharing your story with this game?! Obviously you love it a lot, you have an impressive collection already, but why did you choose to focus on Solstice? I'd love to hear why, were you raised by wizards or something, lol?!

Thanks! I'm finding it to be a real adventure, and in some ways I'm feeling like a digital archeologist. It's a lot of fun, and very exciting whenever I uncover something new to add to the collection. Why Solstice? Well, a couple of reasons. Ever since I was little kid the Fantasy/Adventure genre has been my favorite. Out of all the games of the era that were my favorite (Dragon Warrior, Zelda, Final Fantasy... and many others in a long list), Solstice seemed to be lacking the most love. One one hand that has made it difficult to track things down and get more information, on the other it has made the collection a much more obtainable goal financially -- I will be able to put this massive collection of historical artifacts together for thousands of dollars (rather than tens of thousands of dollars that it would cost with a more popular franchise).

Mainly though, I was inspired by Mike Winterbauer's recent kickstarter for a print run of his award-winning book on classic game covers. He was the artist who created the fantastic Solstice box/cover art, and seeing the way he was preserving the history of his work really inspired me to consider doing my part to preserve gaming history by focusing on something that had important nostalgic connections for myself. In all honesty, I'm not typically a video game collector; though honestly, this project may change that. I do have my fair share of favorite video games I've gathered and preserved over the years, but my collector's forte is actually in the tabletop RPG genre (Dungeons & Dragons, etc.) for which I have a *huge* collection.

So in short, the reason I'm doing this is primary because I loved the game as a kid. Secondly due to pure happenstance: right people, right place, right time for it all to sort of just coalesce into something that inspired me to decide on pursuing it seriously.

Also... I might have been raised by wizards.

Thanks so much for the links! I just sent a friend request out to each. I absolutely intend to follow up with them all, but seeing as they are literally the end-all-and-be-all when it comes to Solstice, I didn’t want to approach them until I had something more visually solid (i.e. at least the framework of the Solstice Virtual Museum I’m putting together this summer) to present to them in order to express how serious I am about preserving the project. I’m sure they all have busy lives, and as some total stranger who is coming asking for their time to reflect on a project they worked on 30 years ago (and potentially procure materials from the era if they are available), I just want to make sure I can make it worth their while.

Again, I really appreciate the info. I’ve been blown away by how friendly and helpful the video game collector community has been. It’s really great to see so many folks ready to help each other out.

I know Ste Pickford but I don't think he had anything to do with Solstice, could be wrong though!

That image on the card is flipped because the person who put it together accidentally used the reverse side of the slide the picture was on, I guarantee it. I've done it myself. Cool to see the whole set together! I only have the tape, which randomly popped up on eBay.

You're probably right! A print error seems much more likely than a layout modification that late in the game's development. I've noticed that prmotional materials for games in this era seem to have quite a few missteps -- maybe due to the hectic production pace in a pre-internet world. Sort of like the "Staff of Demos" advert for Solstice.

I regret that I have nothing to contribute; just want to wish you well on this journey. It's a lot of fun seeing someone so passionate about a particular game that wants to preserve its history.

Best of luck on your quest! I can't wait to see what you end up with.

Thanks! It's been an exciting adventure so far. I've managed to track down a few more things this week, and started the framework for the display... oh, and I finished all the molding for the life-sized Staff of Demnos with a LED phasing crystal orb (based on the staff in the cover art) -- just because I thought it would make the display stand out. I'll post pictures of that as well when I get it done.

I thought it might be fun to share my life-size "Staff of Demnos" replica that I created this weekend. The design is based loosely on the staff depiction in cover art by Mike Winterbauer. This is one of the fun elements I'm creating with the intent to enhance the "theme" of the Solstice display I'm building. Next up on that front: glowing potion bottles. I'm continuing to gather Solstlice items, documents, and artifacts for this project, and I'l likely start actually building the museum-quality display case in a few weeks. I've already got the plans created, and the materials specced out.   Thanks for checking it out.

There are some more photos of the staff on the Facebook page I created for the project (https://www.facebook.com/StaffOfDemnos/) and I uploaded a video to YoutTube that show's the staff with the LEDs phasing to make the orb glow here...

Have a great weekend!

Thank you! It was a lot of fun to make. It took about a day's worth of work -- over the span of about four or five days due to having to wait for things like modeling clay to harden, putty, paint and layers of varnish to dry, etc.
Thanks for the like! I'll be posting there a few times a week throughout the project build until it's complete.

Really cool project. While I've never beaten Solstice, it's always caught my interest with the graphics and artwork. The staff came out really awesome! I just followed your page, can't wait to see what else is being done
