March 11, 2017 Update:

So there are some big changes coming to the project. I've decided to start working on a website to publish all of the articles and reviews as they come out, as well as share my gameplay videos too. I am still considering doing a Twitch stream as well, seeing as how TheMexicanRunner just completed his version of this challenge and how much fun he actually had doing it. The website for now is still under development, and will take about a month for me to actually launch it. It will likely launch with only a few articles and reviews published since all my current content are still "rough" meaning there's a ton of grammatical errors, and typo's.

I'm also thinking of changing my username here on NA, and I'm reaching a point that my physical game collection is running out and I might have to emulate some games.

Anyway, the list of games I'm going to play are as follows:
  • 677 of the 677 US Licensed Games
  • 91 of the 91 US Unlicensed Games
  • Nintendo World Championships
  • Nintendo Campus Challenge
  • 35 PAL Exclusive Licensed Games
  • 1 Exclusive Asian region Licensed title: Mah Jong
  • 26 HES (Australia) Unlicensed Games
  • 18 GLUK (Spain) Unlicensed Games
  • 66 Sachen Unlicensed Games
  • 1 Brazilian Unlicensed Game (Crimebusters)
  • All Brazilian Pirate Games
  • All HKGCC Pirate Games
  • As an added bonus, some Homebrew, Fan-released Unlreleased, and Famicom exclusive titles will be reviewed. The list is incomplete, but for now, the list is as follows:
    • Homebrew
      1. Battle Kid: Fortress of Peril
      2. Battle Kid: Mountain of Torment
    • Fan Released Unreleased
      1. Adventures of Dr. Franken
      2. Airball
      3. Bio Force Ape
      4. Block Out
      5. California Raisins
      6. Chuck Yaeger's: Fighter Combat
      7. Drac's Night Out
      8. Dreamworld Pogie
      9. Hit the Ice
      10. Mike Ditka's Big Play Football
      11. War on Wheels
    • Famicom Exclusives
      • Final Fantasy II (Fan Translated)
      • Final Fantasy III (Fan Translated)
      • Super Mario Bros. 2
      • All Night Nippon Super Mario Bros.
      • Yumi Kojo: Doki Doki Panic
      • Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light (Fan Translated)
      • Fire Emblem Gaiden (Fan Translated)
      • Mother (Fan Translated)
      • Holy Diver
      • Kid Dracula
      • Splatterhouse: Wanpaku Graffiti
      • Recca Summer Carnival '92
      • Adventure Island 4
      • Gradius II
      • Ys (Fan Translated)
      • Ys II (Fan Translated)
      • Ys III (Fan Translated)
      • Digital Devil Monogatari: Megami Tensei (Fan Translated)
      • Digital Devil Monogatari: Megami Tensei II (Fan Translated)

Original Post:

After thinking about it for around a month and a half now, I've finally decided on a format for my book project. It's titled: World of Nintendo: Guide to the NES Library.

This book will feature information of every single NES game in the NTSC-USA and PAL libraries. Some titles only earning a quarter page, while other titles earning entire pages, or even double pages dedicated to themself.

It will also feature at least 25 full game pixel perfect walkthroughs of my personal top 25 games and possibly some centerfolds ala Nintendo Power.

There will be other sections as well which will be dedicated to hardware, accessories, test cartridges, promotional displays, Nintendo Power Magazine, variants, and homebrews.

Each game will have its box and cartridge art displayed in beautiful detail with information such as publisher, release date, product code, players, special requirements, rarity, and a full detailed review based around four critical aspects each aspect earning up to 10 points, Graphics, Audio, Gameplay, and Replay Value based on a perspective of TODAY'S gamer, and not yesteryear's.

The book will be 9" x 12" and pack in around 600 pages of full color content, I will also be including an NES box sized checklist book that allows you to track your collection, and fits in nicely with your CIB collection. There will also be a vinyl sticker decal of the artwork I am going to comission for the cover. It's going to be MASSIVE weighing in around 5 pounds and about 2 inches thick.

I will not be taking preoders, and I think it's fair to say that a book of this size and quality will be fairly priced at $60.

Since I've only began to toss around the layout, I've got nothing to show in that regards, but here's what the cover might look like...keep in mind this is just a sketch and I haven't comissioned the artwork yet.

I also want to add special details like painted book edges, a slip cover, h-seam sealed, a bookmark, a poster, and a stack of postcards, and something REALLY special if the person of interest is willing to co-op with me.

I'll try and keep progress limited to this thread. If this belongs in Gamers Gauntlet instead, please move it mods!

Oh and last but certainly not least: 10% of all proceeds (right off the top) will go to a charity for SIDS Research in memory of my son, Vincent.

WTB Cdn sealed black boxes, sealed Cdn first party titles.    I.e. the "mattel" Cdn boxes with both french and english.   Mainly black boxes, zelda, link, and tyson, but let me know what you have.    I am interested in anything I don't already have!

I'll need it!

16 to 20 games a week is my goal! That means play, complete, review, scan, and research.

in for 1, sight-unseen. Sounds like it'll be a blast to research, but surely a lot of work to put together. You seem to have exactly the attention to detail something like this requires, though.

Awesome, thanks for the support.

I'm legitimately concerned about some things though. Since I'm doing it from the eyes of a modern gamer it'll be tough to review Sports and Trivia games with outdated information.

Also, I don't want to immediately discount childrens games, non-games, and the systems only "girl" game just because they aren't my style, but I also don't think they deserve the attention of the same rating scale. The 5 Sesame Streets, the 3 Fisher-Prices, Barbie, DK Math, Mario Is Missing/Time Machine, Mickey's Numberland/Letterland, Videomation, Cartoon Workshop, Waldo Search, Carmen Sandiego, Color A Dinosaur, Miracle Piano, and Racermate.

Then I also want to give special attention to laughably shitty unlicensed games while separating the decent ones with serious reviews, I'm talking Active, 6-in-1, Panesian, Bunch/Color Dreams, SACHEN, HES...again not on the same scale since they're just for the most part so darn crappy, yet worth it for the humor.

Roughly a year, more realistic, a year and a half.

This is my "I have a dream", and I want to make it as information rich as possible and I will legitimately play through everything I review unless the game is impossible to beat , there is no ending, or the ending requires years of mastery (e.g. Cheetahmen II, or DK Tetris killscreen)

I'm going to be honest, I would be much more excited about this if it hadn't already been done...twice in fact (to my knowledge): Jeffrey Wittenhagen as well as Pat the NES Punk both had successful Kickstarter campaigns.

Jeff's book is great but lacks a lot of what I want to put into this book. Pat's book I haven't had a chance to read but from what I've seen he *does* have very similar content as what I plan, however I do plan to be very, very different. I want this book to feel like a super large issue of Nintendo Power...without any ads. I want people to read this book and be inspired to play the NES instead of just use it as an index.

I promise to work my hardest to make you excited about this book

The more I think of it, the more I realize that 25 games is too hard to choose to do pixel perfect multipage walkthroughs and I might need to bump it up to 30 or more, but I'm limiting myself for good reason.

Good luck with the project! Love the work so far on the WIP cover. The "collector series" shelf logo is pretty cool.

Thanks, just a quick update too.

I've uploaded a demo page. This is what a page will look like with "lesser" games, basically no major work to be done on these pages, I want to say about 2/3 of the book will look *something* like this of course with more fleshed out detail.

And before anyone asks, yes that's Bronty's (former) Stadium Events. I will however be using scans of my own along with scans from other people with permission.

Did you do the layout yourself? It looks great! Any prior experience in layout design?

It's just a sketch for now, but yeah I did it on my own.

I have tons of graphic design experience from many years ago and I still do graphic design on the side when I have downtime and need some quick cash.

Quite an undertaking, good luck with everything. I would definitely be interested in buying a copy when it releases, rather put money in your pocket than Pat the NES Dink.

Something can be arranged. I'd love to get a copy of Crimebusters and to my knowledge it's the only Brazilian exclusive game

That isn't an expensive game to buy.
I don't have but there are a few on MercadoLivre.
