I picked up an NES off of Craigslist yesterday and after cleaning it up noticed that the top half has a textured surface. My other console has a smooth top surface. I may have overlooked this with about 6 or 8 units I have had over the last few years since I became interested in the NES again. Does anyone have any info or theories on the textured top vs non-textured?

Non-textured top is in fact a test-market NES. Check out the serial number on the bottom and report back.

That's odd as that serial is in the 30 millions, but I suppose it's possible someone swapped a top off another. I think it with those links shared has been debated here enough that early era stuff was smooth and the rest was textured.

In one of those links moderator K Thrower has one with a serial super near yours.

According to my research, and found in a previously mentioned thread above, "Smooth top consoles transitioned to textured top somewhere between N5381765 and N7225861"

Based on that it's safer to say somewhere between 5,500,00 - 7,250,000.

I suppose its also possible to say that the transition earlier, and my 5M example originally had a textured top but was switched to a smooth one. I do think its pretty close though!
