Quoting 8 month old post to make another random comment...

I was just playing the Famicom version of this (which keeps the original computer title of Hostages), and thought the differences were interesting.

For text, the victory screens are the only thing in Japanese, and the difficulties are now just easy, middle (?), and hard instead of ranks.

What's really weird are the controls. The controls are a bit different in the spotlight sections. Somersault is diagonal on the D-pad instead of the A button, for example, which is actually how the American manual says it's performed! (Maybe this was a change made after the manual was finalized?)

The strangest change is in the first person parts. The D-pad is no longer relative to your character (like every other 1st person maze thing on NES) its relative to the map! Really awkward.

Overall, the Famicom version is easier because enemies are still displayed on the map on harder missions/settings (at least they were on mission Jupiter on easy and middle difficulty), so you don't have to worry about running out of time hunting for the last few guys.

I'm really having a tough time getting started in Pirates. Every time I attack a fort, I end up in a sword battle with 28 men vs. 125 or so and never can win. I'm just not understanding something basic I guess.
I'm just about done with this game. Sailing is incredibly slow and tedious and I'm nowhere near the goals I need to be King's Advisor. I'm starting from the beginning for the 4th time right now.

I remember Pirates from playing it on the computers. Always great reviews, but it was one of those games I never really understood how to play.

Star Voyager is done:

EDIT: Also, started playing Jajamaru Gekimaden: Maboroshi no Kinmajou. Seems reasonably fun and straightforward so far, even though I accidentally screwed up by declining to save before putting the game into an inescapable "Please hold RESET when turning the power off" mode...sigh.

Pirates! is done.

Whoever wrote the enormous FAQ on this on gamefaqs really did give a good strategy for getting a high score. However, the sailing/cloud mechanic (with its combination of boredom and frustration) and the annoyingness level of the ship-to-ship fights make this game a one and done for me. Other than those two things, it's a pretty fun game. Searching for treasure / family with the maps can also be a huge timewaster.
  • played as Journeyman first two expeditions, then leveled up to Adventurer for the last
  • only made it to Count in the English navy, no other country gave me any titles
  • got the best wife (scary red hair and cute black cat)
  • got all 4 incan treasures
  • saved all 4 family members
  • got the treasure train twice and the silver fleet twice
  • for the last expedition, leveled to Adventurer, got the silver fleet and last incan treasure for about 200K gold, then sold all ships but one and thinned out my crew to just 10 men before retiring (this is key to the strategy for a really high score).

I'll start on the last AD&D game next week (don't think anyone has mentioned they're actively working on it)

Hey all, I popped in Kid Icarus but decided that i'm just not interested in playing it again, once was enough for me I think.

I think that instead I will pick up NES Open Tournament Golf, if it's yet unclaimed, as that one is capturing my attention a lot more.

As for Dungeon Magic, if anyone else wants to take a stab then they can feel free.

NES Open is a huge grind, you could probably beat Kid Icarus 10+ times before you could beat that one...

I appreciate the info, as I'd like to beat this one sometime.
I read the same FAQ a few months ago, but without having played the game much (I have a vague childhood memory of playing it in DOS?), it seemed really intimidating.

I'm kind of taking my time and savoring Dragon Warrior IV (the only one I hadn't played at all), but I'm still making progress.

Ha ha, no kidding. I just read the manual, looks like my best chance will be to just play the US tournament over and over. I'm already a pro rank player, so I only need to win the 18-hole tournament 17 times to get the million. Fortunately I think I'm addicted to it now so it won't be so harsh.

Going to start my first tournament tonight, hope it isn't too hard to get first place finishes.

Speaking of grinding through sports games, I've got about another 8 hours of baseball before Roger Clemens will be done for the year. It's a poor man's RBI Baseball, and thus it's not actually too unpleasant to play.

Easily on track to set my new personal record for the US course for my 4th tournament, after its done I will have 240k, so only 13 tournaments to go and NES Open Tournament Golf will be done.

My yet burnt out, maybe next year I will replay it but do only the UK or JP cups.

AD&D: Pool of Radiance is done. Definitely worth playing again sometime.

I guess I'll take on Destiny of an Emperor next since that seems like the kind of game I'd dig.

LIES!  It's a bad bad port, and all the people who made it need stabbed.  I refuse to play it, and shall talk about the ports evil every time the game is mentioned.  EVIL.

Picked up a vaus controller a few weeks back. Got around to using it and the thing is busted. :/ I'm really not thrilled with how much they cost either but I'm gonna try and grab another one. The speed with regular controller isn't gonna happen.

Oh god I tried to smash my NES controller as hard as I could on the ground for Castle of Dragon. THREE times I got to the final boss and died because A) WHY IS THE GAME EATING MY JUMP INPUTS and B) WHERE THE FUCK IS THE BOSSES HIT BOX?!?!?!?

Im at a loss... I keep getting to this freaking boss and dying. The GameFaq said the last boss takes about 13-15 hits. I hit him at LEAST 15 times and I didn't kill him?!!?

Also for those of you that dont know, even tho the game is short its ONE LIFE. So every time I die at the boss... I have to start at the beginning of the game again.

I'm still puttering away at Jajamaru Gekimaden: Maboroshi no Kinmajou. Frankly it seems like a very easy game that I could power through in a day, but I'm playing it in shorter sessions so I can save it for when I'm watching trash TV with my wife.

Well I finally did it and beat Castle of Dragon. And I have no idea how. Im trying to figure out why the game eats your jump inputs because I frequently walk off a ledge. I think you have to jump, THEN jump and move forward. Also when fighting the boss, I think if anything by your feet gives you damage (like the dragons tail) it'll prevent you from jumping. So you have to really jump into the dragons head to hit him. I dunno... I feel like this game is just a small step above Cheetahments II programming.
