They're lining up!

Two from MegaCat Studios are now out:

Dushlan is ready for release, for those who have been following the thread about it here on NA: https://megacatstudios.com/collec...

And also Expedition, a card-based RPG based on a tabletop game. There are no pictures that I can find at the link or elsewhere, so it is hard to tell what it is exactly, but the idea sounds intriguing: https://megacatstudios.com/collec...

Also Balanced Diet for the GBA by 8-Bit Evolution is now out. It is limited to 100 copies and is available over in the seller's forum: http://vintage.nintendoage.com/fo...

More soon, and a big update soon enough. That must mean that...

Thanks for the update. I've tried emailing you guys about products (namely Expedition) but never get a response. The cart pages load poorly too which prevents check out. Any assistance or whatnot would be helpful.

In this specific case, I cannot directly help you. I'm not part of Mega Cat Studios. I programmed "City Trouble" and collaborated with them so they can publish it on cartridges, but we're still two separate teams.

So, any question about the contents of the game should go to me as the developer. But the website is not in my influence.

However, if you give me your e-mail address and a text that you want them to read, I can send your request directly to the people that I'm in contact with: James D. and Will. Usually, they answer me within one or two days. I can ask them to get into contact with you and tell you what they said.

I'm not even going to say "actual list update coming" this time  , but until April 1st a limited version of the Mystic Origins cart can be ordered. It is yellow like the NES test carts of old (at least the Zelda one anyways). There are a bunch of Mystic Searches options on the site too!

For those that do not know, Mystic Origins is a prequel beta that leads up to Mystic Searches.

Lots of things happening these days.

Tortoises by Vec was released at the Cowlitz show last weekend. The leftover copies are being auctioned off here on NA: http://vintage.nintendoage.com/fo...

Mega Ran's album in available on INL's site: http://www.infiniteneslives.com/r...

The limited OST for indie game Alwa's Awakening is being released on cart at the end of the month.

Hmm, with so much happening in the homebrew world these days it seems like there was more...

Oh, and the Spook-o'-tron KS is still live for another 10 days! https://www.kickstarter.com/proje...

Unholy Night was 40% off last week and 60% off now. I get the feeling they printed WAY too many of these and vastly overestimated the market. The bad reviews probably don't help.

Is that a homebrew...? It says it was developed by ex SNK staffers. That "insider knowledge" from back when they would have had official development kits makes this not a homebrew to me. Similarly I wouldn't call Dreamworld Pogie a homebrew, though I happily backed it and own a copy.

Wasn't Dreamworld Pogie found in an attic, whereas this is a whole new game from the ground up? That's where I draw the line, but to each his or her own.

I guess I see homebrew as not only after a system's heydey, but using information and tools obtained via reverse engineering. These folks presumably already knew the system from when they were part of a large corporation that had deals with Nintendo...so I'd see that as an "unfair advantage" so to speak. Like, they had day jobs making full size games for these systems in the past. None of us can boast that (for long anyway). Doesn't mean I wouldn't support games made in this fashion, I just wouldn't call them homebrews.

Yeah, I get where you're coming from. It's a loose term, and this case either expands or narrows one's definition. That they did not have large corporate backing pushes it one direction, whereas their pasts push it another. That's one thing I like about figuring out just what a homebrew is. Well, back to playing my Zelda Outlands homebrew  .

I figure us players have similar interest in a brand new aftermarket game whether it's buy some old timey SNK people or you fancy DIY guys. Let's go into that full set debate thread and pit one side against the other to decide if this is unlicensed or homebrew.

Homebrew is such an abused term. I see it tossed all over the place on youtube, calling really shitty remakes of mario that play buggily on pc a "homebrew" for example. It seems to basically be an umbrella term for "anything not official." Even though on this site and for me personally it has taken on a much more specific meaning probably leaning closer to "labor of love that I'm not making for any other reason other than that I want to." Doesn't mean that's "correct" though. TBH, "indie game" probably is a better term for any complete, from the ground up title as it would encompass this fighting game on SNES as well as games made by individuals on this site for example.

homebrew definition threads abound on NA, but I'm fond of my own words (i guess lighting up arch on an old thread):

Most [homebrew definition] conversations go like this (time me nate, should take less than a minute):

"You know the old NES? Yeah, the first Nintendo? I make..." [choose one]

Homebrews: It's a game that's made by me. Yeah, I programmed it, got a few friends to do the graphics and music, a few buddies tested it.

Reproductions (AKA repros, not repos): So there's this kickass game that was made but never released. I took the program, burned it onto a chip, soldered that onto a board and made a label. Yeah, this tall ugly guy even made a box for it!

Hacks: Remember Zelda? Nah, the original one? So I hacked it, changed the graphics and the quests and stuff. It's crazy fun!

This all ends with:
"So I sold a few on this nintendo forum (or my own website). [Quickly follow it up with] Hey, so you wanna go back to my dorm room?"

Time.

Also, EskimoBob is avail on KS

I want to start a poll on which Kickstarter is more likely to arrive first: the physical copy of the 8-bit Heroes Documentary or the CIB Lizard.
