Howdy everyone!

We had quite the success with last year's NES homebrew compo.  The cartridge is nearing completion and we're planning out how we'd like to publish the cartridge's CIB.

We've got ~$3.3k of funds built up in the compo fund.

We're considering investing ~$600 for 200 copies traditional boxes.  Or using stoneagegamer's bitboxes which cost ~$2.50ea but don't require any upfront printing investments.  This is the cost for the community fund, not the price of CIB vs loose cart for individual buyers.

I made a poll over on nesdev, and wanted to do so here as well to get the input from the NA portion of the community.  I didn't see a means to create a poll thread, so please just chime in with your vote.  Poll added!

We're also planning to make a 60pin famicom version release along with the 72pin NES.  If you are interested in purchasing a famicom flavor, and have input on what type of CIB you'd like for that specifically, please speak up.  I hear sega bitboxes work well with famicom carts, so I ordered one to test out.  Possible we could stuff a famicom cart inside a traditional NES box with a bigger styro or something though.

Thanks!

You can make a poll, if you edit your post there's an add a poll option.

Personally I prefer cardboard

Thanks for the tip, I tried but there wasn't a way to add voting options.. Maybe it's free form? Either way I don't see the poll I created..

Enter your question for the poll and hit Add. You will see it makes its own line for the question. Then to add lines to the poll click the two little speech bubbles to the right of your question. It should bring up an Answer window. Just type whatever your answer is into the Answer line and hit Add. You can do this pretty much as many times as you want to add as many responses to your question as you want. If you need to edit anything, hit the little gears. If you want to move any of the answers just hit the up and down arrows to the right. To finish you simply hit "Back" on the Answer screen then "Close" on the Question screen. You won't actually see the poll till after you post from there I think. Hope this helps.!

Cardboard IMO. I like a box I can put with my other boxes and they all look like one big happy family.

Not a huge fan of bitboxes... they are too big.

I'd prefer cardboard.

Looks like the poll is pretty one sided.

Cardboard! It should be a pretty safe investment, considering the amazing releases that were in last year's competition (previous years' too, but vol. 2 lacked an easily identifiable headliner).

Always cardboard. Never bitboxes. I only have one bit box game at the moment and every time I look at it I want to hide it.

Thanks for all the responses guys! We've settled on traditional boxes assuming all goes as planned with the print house. Traditional easily won the votes with NA and nesdev added together. nesdev actually leaned bitbox, but only a few responses compared to you guys.

Will most likely be going with bitboxes for the famicom release. If/when traditional boxes run dry for the NES release we'll likely switch to bitboxes, but that'll be awhile from now (year or more) I assume.

And yes, we'll be listing them up for purchase on my site when it's time for release. Just a heads up, we'll probably have a number of limited editions with clear cartridge cases. They'll be fixed price (higher than RE grey), and first come first serve. I'll post here, nesdev, and my social media (Twitter/FB) prior to release, so keep an eye out if you're looking to snatch up one of those. The limited editions will help offset the upfront cost of traditional boxes, and give folks an opportunity to contribute a little extra to the compo efforts if they choose.

That perfectly distills the difference between the two communities. Not a slam on either, cheerfully making fun of both at the same time:
nesdev: LOGIC. (cheaper)
nintendoage: FEELS. (nostalgia)   <<I'm firmly in the feels camp myself

The reasons/logic for bitboxes that were provided were more along the lines of functionality and durability.  But yes, there aren't many collectors on nesdev that like everything to match.

Long term bitboxes actually end up being more expensive on a per unit basis, but avoid the up front investment and guesses as to best qty to purchase that's hard to get right.

I love the cardboard box. I just checked out their site, more cool homebrews to get, I didn't even know about homebrew games till I came here, now I have bought 6 and am waiting on 2 kickstarters.

The Vol. 1 LE is what got me started buying/collecting homebrews, which led to playing/experiencing/being aware of a lot more than I probably would have otherwise. Gotta catch 'em all, and I can't let games not be played. Looking forward to it!
